One of the hardest things that many of us may struggle with is not just starting things, but finishing them. You may have tons of great ideas or perhaps tasks on your plate with all the energy to begin them; but if you don’t have the wherewithal to actually complete them, there is no point to starting them in the first place. Sound familiar? Not to fear. We offer the most effective ways to help you complete what you have started and have the success that you deserve.
Â
How to complete what you have started
1. Start with Work: Though it may be tempting to get all the “fun†stuff done first-meaning everything but whatever you started, so that you can devote all your energies and hard work to the project you have in mind; don’t do it-as you will most likely get caught up in the fun, and never go back to the project or task. So, start with the work; and once you do, you will be more apt to finish it, in order to get to the fun stuff.
2. Be Ready for Trouble: Every single project or task has some setbacks-by nature-so make sure to know that they will be on their way, and this is certainly no time or excuse to drop the project. Instead, be ready for the setbacks with planned responses, so that you can make sure to finish what you started.
3. Rewards: It is vital in doing anything that you have set your sights on to reward yourself for small and large accomplishments towards that goal. So, if you have decided you will lose 20 pounds, reward yourself when you have lost ten with a new shirt or another token. This will keep you motivated and less likely to stray from your goals.
4. Small Goals: If you have set before yourself a task or goal that is overwhelming large, it is most likely that you will give up before it is finished-feeling like it is impossible. Instead, make sure to break down the big goal into small and reachable goals, and even structure these goals according to time increments to make sure you are reaching the small goals, and thus, you can also chart your progress.
5. Be Realistic: One of the most common reasons that people never finish what they have started for goals is that they begin with a goal that seems unattainable-ideal but unattainable-and so, it becomes too much to tackle. Instead, you should think realistically. What is something that you can achieve-with a normal schedule of obligations and life-according to a realistic amount of time, and magnitude of scope? It is vital that you dream in small goals, as they can are attainable; and can lead you towards a larger frame goal in the future.
6. Tell Everyone: Make sure when you have decided to work towards a goal that you have told your friends, relatives, and colleagues. This way, there is record that you have begin such an enterprise; and thus, you are accountable in your mind. Your friends and colleagues will ask you how things are going on that goal, and so you will be more motivated to stay focused on it until you accomplish it.
7. Find a Way to Measure It: Absolutely crucial to your success of finishing something you have started is to find a way to measure its success. It could be a certain quantity of product, a number of steps taken towards the goal, or any number of small goals attained. Whatever it is, make sure the measure is specific to time and character.
8. Have Fun: Do your very best to have fun finishing this goal. Whether this means getting friends involved, listening to music while you do it, or taking a dancing class; make it enjoyable, so that you have more motivation to continue doing it.
9. Have Only One Goal at a Time: People making goals can often start a whole list of goals they want to achieve in making themselves a new person or towards a larger goal. If you have a number of goals going at the same time, you are more likely to get overwhelmed and drop them all. Instead, you should focus on just one-as it is attainable and the more effort you can offer it, the sooner and with more success you complete it.
10. Take Small Breaks: While procrastination is the last thing you want in order to finish your goal successfully, it can often be helpful to take small breaks when you are un-focused or stressed. There are times when you can work through stress and negativity, and times when you just need a break. Forcing can result in being done with the goal altogether. So, make sure to take small breaks where you perhaps call a friend, go for a walk, or something mindless. This way, you can come back to the goal more refreshed and with a better perspective .
Question ;Do you always  complete what you start ? If so what additional  steps do you take ?

Very well said. I love how you said to be realistic and to tell everyone. Sometimes when setting goals it’s easy to expect the end result now, but within those big goals we have to set smaller obtainable goals.
Also by telling everyone, you develop a support system. We just have to be careful about who we tell because unfortunately everyone doesn’t have our best interest at heart. Therefore we have to tell people who we know will support and encourage us, rather than telling individuals who are prone to discourage us and pull us down.
Great article, thanks for sharing!!

The idea of telling everyone is one that I find to be very powerful for me. When I know that others are aware, it just makes completing “it” all that more do-able…something about letting others know really can light that fire to complete it!

Even with carefully laid out steps some people have trouble following through and finishing things.
I think the biggest problem with those people is they try to take on too many things, like you said. (One goal at a time, and be realistic)
Sometimes the very nature of goal setting is often unrealistic for people.
I myself am a big goal setter. It helps me stay focused!
Great ideas.

Wonderful list! I use the simple Chop Wood Carry Water and present moment living routine. Knowing how distracted I can get doing something, this seems to be the only thing that works for me.

Fatima, you caught me again with a blush on my face. I can never promise to finish anything I start. I like beginnings too much. For a year now, I’ve been trying (half-trying, actually not trying at all) to organize aphorisms I’ve written over a twenty year period into some semblance of order. But all I do (and like to do) is write new ones.

It’s easy to let those little distractions get in the way but once you clear those all away completion just becomes a formality. Lovely post!
