The beauty of time lies within the mere fact that it is so precious and we all have the luxury to do whatever we so choose to do with it. How awesome! Effective time management comes into play not just in organisations , it’s also plays a crucial part of our personal  daily lives. Essentially effective time management is all about getting more value for money; I mean time. it’s our ability to make constructive decisions to manage our time and be happy .For some, getting more value for time might mean spending more time with the family, relaxing, setting up a business, attending the gym , praying & meditating or to embrace your hobby. This list could go on; add yours to the list… at the bottom!
Time could simply mean our ability to measure progression of moments. The past and present allows us to convey an event that has ended and an event we anticipate will occur. This is my best understanding of time; I wouldn’t bother going into the numerical, scientific or nature of it.
The problem with time is it waits for no man! We all have 24 hours of it a day and yet some of us will reap the benefits but then some of us may struggle for various reasons. Basically some of us will run out of time! Nothing gets done … nothing happens and time keeps flying by…. Below are a few tips to help manage time.
Â
12 Effective Time Management tips to Deal with Time Constraints
1, Quiz: Yes! You need to quiz yourself. Create a quiz in your mind or on a piece of paper based on your circumstances .You may also take one of the effective time management quizzes on- line. In your quest for effective time management ask yourself positive empowering questions; these usually breed better results. “Questions focus our thinking. Ask empowering questions like what’s good about this? What’s not perfect about it yet? What I am going to do next time? How can I do this and have fun doing it†~Charles Connolly. Questions focus our thinking. Ask empowering questions like: What’s good about this? and What’s not perfect about it yet?
2, Set your priorities: It’s Very important to table out what’s important for you and what can wait. Make a list it’s a great tool and can be very effective in managing your time. This should give you a sense of control and an idea of what could or should be done if time is constrained .There should be a scale of preference so you’ll be able to allocate time effectively in order of importance.
3, Eliminate interruptions: Interruptions and distractions are elements that engulf one’s time. It can come from different angles and in various forms. It’s worth sitting down to ask yourself questions yet again .what are those things I do on a daily basis that take up my time unnecessarily? Here you simply eliminate them or reduce the time spent in these unnecessary, unproductive activities.
4, Make up plans. Once you have successfully gone through Nos 1, 2 &3 it’s time to make plans. Start again with questions like what I am hoping to accomplish? How am I going to go about it? Write as you go along.. Baby steps can be utilised here. And don’t forget to write out your plans with a dead line; it does help.
5, Set goals: with plans you need set goals that should keep you inspired. Goals are not only absolutely necessary to motivate us. They are essential to really keep us alive~ Robert Schuller.
6, Be Realistic: here yes! Please try and leave your “comfort zone†and push yourself to the limit but our body is very good at telling you when to stop though..Listen to your body and set out realistic goals; otherwise you may just be put off, deviate and not stick to the preset plan.
7, Deal with Self doubt: Doubt loves creeping in when you about to make change. Remember here to “Trust yourself.†Create the kind of self that you will be happy to live with all your life. “Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement†~ Golda Meir.
8, Kick out Procrastination: self doubt and procrastination are from the same generation; they both have identical, ugly heads roaring around looking for their victims daily. Just try and imagine having to deal with both of them! So Mr self doubt creeps in to provide you with all the reasons you can’t….. Whilst Miss Procrastination comes matching in shouting “postpone it until tomorrowâ€!! Postpone it for now!! … And she never really leaves you! she comes everyday with the same ugly message. The good thing is once you are able to recognise this you’ll take action and work through it.
9, Have a Routine: It’s true that routine can be boring as well as monotonous but then they can be very useful. it provides us with structure and platform to run our day to day activities; we all have one or a few .Get into a routine.
10, Be creative: If you hate routine(s) like me it’s worth being creative. So yes create a routine but once you feel you are getting bored of it/ they please don’t forget to implement change!
11, Have a Review : Here you want to look back at all you have set out to do in terms of change and reaping the benefits out of time and integrating effective time management into your life .You simply twig here and there to make adjustments as needed. And if things have not gone to plan do try something different and don’t give up; remember your goal!
12, Celebrate your success: at the end of successfully accomplishing any task, goal or achievement it’s absolutely necessary (hey I am literally screaming here) to celebrate and reward yourself!

These points are wonderful! It wasn’t until I read thru them that I realized I actually Do do these every morning in my journal. It helps me to prioritize and ask the questions, set goals etc. and of course since I wrote it all down, that alone helps me be accountable.

#7-12 really speak to me.
Self-doubt is looming in everyone, but you just have to be yourself. No one is better at being you than you.
Once you deal with that, it’s much easier to move forward, be creative and start a routine to get crackin’!

Great post. I really thought the first tip to quiz yourself was a good recommendation. Sometimes we really do just need to sit down and ask ourselves the questions so we can make certain we are integrating the right solutions that match up with what we ultimately want. I totally agree with what you said about questions empowering our thinking.

Thank you, I, too, liked the idea of quizzing yourself – you can do this at any time of the day, in the midst of any activity. I think this ties in well with point #6 – be realistic. We get so involved with set routines that we sometimes cannot evaluate how we are relating to the time we have in the day. Being realistic means being honest about what we are doing and why, and also about having the courage to change or stop doing some things if necessary. And of course #12 – celebrate your success – is so affirming. Yet we often forget this very essential way to view our time. Thanks for the reminder!

There are many factors that are a big hindrance in managing our time. Interruptions is one of the most unavoidable factor that that I encounter everyday, especially those triggered by the people we care about. Perhaps we should give some leeway for this in our time management.

Great post, Fatima! The very first sentence of this post set the tone for me, and inspired me to write this new aphorism:. “We forget that Time is in our hands, we are not in the hands of Time.”

@SuZen , its nice though to recognize that we alone are accountable .
True @One of the Guys, that self doubt looms around almost everyone , Self-doubt is the little voice in your head saying ” You Can Do It!” and the big voice saying ” I Wish You Would”…listen to the little voice†~ Sean O’Donnell quote . With recognition and appropriate creative steps we could simply get on…..
Thanks @Sibly, I love to quiz myself every now and then ,it’s nice because the mind/ brain seems to have a fascinating way in delivery answers .
Thanks @ Catrien, celebration is key it allows us to look forward to our next task.
Thanks @Walter, it’s lovely once we establish that leeway because we end up spending more time hopefully engaging in activities we enjoy most .

Thanks @Ayo for your comment and sharing, with regards to getting priorities right , I have found preparing a list useful but then just the mere thinking of that list gets me going, the earlier I tackle it the better and lighter I feel. Random interruptions may not be totally eliminated but can be reduced with creative strategies . Have a wonderful weekend

Have you tried the Pomodoro technique? It’s worked really well for lots of our friends, allowing us to be super productive in a short time, which gives us time for the things that just can’t be done in one spurt.
